Who can participate on a course?
The courses are open to anyone interested in the topics covered. Completed courses can be included in degrees at the University of Helsinki. In addition, the skills acquired can be an asset in different professions.
Do the courses have prerequisites? Are previous studies required?
No – the topics covered can often be familiar from your everyday life and, therefore, easy to approach. The course materials attempt to make the terms covered in teaching as easy to understand as possible. However, feel free to read up on the terms and concepts on your own.
When do I register for the course through the Open University?
You can study a MOOC course up to a certain point without course registration. Course registration through the Open University is only required towards the end of the course if you wish to receive credits for the course. Course registration is required for the credits to be registered in the University of Helsinki study register.
Please do not register for a course just in case. If you have completed course registration, but your name is not on the list of students who have passed the course, a failing graded may be recorded in the University of Helsinki study register.
What kind of course materials are used on a MOOC course?
There are assignments that are built to support your learning. The course materials may include videos and podcasts in addition to tradional text-based content. They have been selected to highlight different sources of information. The materials are available online.
How can I receive credits for a course?
Completed course and credits are registered in the University of Helsinki study register within 4 to 6 weeks of course completion. Your course completion will be registered when you meet the course completion requirements and have enrolled on the course through the Open University.
You will be able to view information on your course completions in the national My Studyinfo service. Finnish online banking ID is required to log in to the service. You can request an official transcript of studies. The instructions are available on the Open University website.
If you wish to have the course included in your studies at another institute of higher education (university, university of applied sciences) or in secondary education (high school or vocational school): Contact the student services of your home institution. The decision to include the credits will be made by your institution.
I have questions regarding the course. Who should I contact?
If your question is related to course contents, assignments, course completion methods: Please contact the teacher of the course. You can find the teachers contact information on the course platform.
Some courses also feature a discussion forum, where you can also ask questions.

Which user account do I use in the learning environment?
Access to a University of Helsinki user account is usually not provided nor required on MOOC courses. You will not need one to study. However, if you already have a user account at a Finnish institute of higher education, you can use that to log in. Otherwise, please create a user account for MOOC platform according to the instructions on the platform.
Why can't I log in to a course with Haka login?
If you try to log in using Haka login with your organization's ID and you receive a message "Can't create a new account, because the email address is already registered", you have probably created earlier yourself a local ID. In this case, use that ID and log in by entering your ID and password directly in the fields on the login page.
If you want to use Haka login in the future, you can
- change the e-mail address associated with the self-created local account to something else or
- you can ask for a deletion of the ID, contact moodle(at)helsinki.fi, in which case all your course achievements, such as credits and submissions, will also be deleted and cannot be recovered.
I have forgotten my password. What should I do?
If you have forgotten your local account password, click "Forgotten your username or password?" and follow the instructions. If you don't see a password reset link in your email, check your email for spam. Please note that it may take up to a day for the password to be sent to your email. If the password does not appear, contact moodle(at)helsinki.fi.
For a Haka ID, follow the instructions for your organization to change the password. If you have an University of Helsinki ID, see Changing the passwords online. Please also make sure you log in to the site under "Haka Login".
Why can't I log in with my old ID?
If you are unable to log in to the site and do not receive a password reset message and you have not logged in with your account for more than three years, then your account has obviously been made inactive. Contact moodle(at)helsinki.fi to activate your account.
